Love

This is a poem about Rick and Dick Hoyt. These two men are a strong example of how love and family are your life and you do what you can for them. Rick was choked by his umbilical cord at birth and suffered brain damage, he cannot control his limbs and for many years people thought he couldn't think. His parents however knew better and were able to find a new piece of technology to allow him to communicate. Rick told his father he wanted to run marathon's,and his father and him have ran marathons ever since. This story really touches me, because when I was born I to was choked by an umbilical cord, luckily I was fortunate and live normally. In a way however I really do consider Rick to be luckier, he now has a bond with his father stronger than anything.

Love
How far can love go?
What length will it reach?
Where can it be found?
How do you show it?
Love is all around
A boy
Looking up to his father
The love for his father beams in his eyes
Typing on his machine to talk
His brain damaged since birth
In one simple notion he wants to run a marathon
Seeing this feeling in his boys eyes
The father trains and trains
The day comes, the race is ran
Boy looks to father some time later
He says "I want to do it again.
When we run it feels like I am free"
From that day on the love never ended
The father and the son continue to race
The boy is always brought along
Never an afterthought
Rather a forethought
Their lives touches many
But simply it is..
A man
A boy
And a never ending love for another.

  1. Amanda, I love it! You took such a touching story and made a very amazing poem out of it. It's hard to pour that much emotion and feeling into a poem, but you are great at it! You are really good at open form, and I am looking forward to reading more.

  2. This was enjoyable on many levels. The introduction piece was itwelf moving. Your final thought, not feeling only pity, but compassion for the boy, reflects a mature moral view on your part. Your willingness to share your own experience as a newborn is also a point of pride in your security as an indevidual. The poem itself works well for you, and I would say the part I enjoyed most was the way you decided to finish, with the lines of repetition, and then tapering into the powerful lines of " a man, a boy". The emotional impact is heightened by the slowing down, and isolateing those characters. If you ever want to look at the piece from a revision point of view, let me know. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Amanda, this was such a great poem and a very touching introduction! Is this the story about the dad that helps his son and they do iron man triatholons? If it is, I love that story and how determined the dad is to make his son's dream come true.
